Santome area ,which means "three rich fields", consists of Kamitome, Simotome and
Nakatome and deciduous wood of oaks typical of Musashino can been seen there. The fields of Santome
for agriculture were developed about 300 years ago by Kawagoe Local Government in Edo age.
But the field of Santome lacked water supply to grow the rice as well as poor soil therefore
trees of deciduous oaks were planted to supply fermented manure from their leaves.
Such a sustainable argriculture still survives in Santome today, however recently many of the woods
has been lost due to high land tax rate placed on succession.
I took to painting this picture on October 14, 2001 and completed it on October 20 at and inside
the wood located in Kamitome, Miyosi Towmn. In front of the pass through the wood and over the field,
a white building of Kamitome Primary School is seen , the scenery from the roof of
this school is often intoduced to visually explain what Musashino is.
Everythings in the wood of october were quiet. Even the sun shines looked like as looking at quietly without no
busy stirring winds as though the wood prepared themselves waiting for special event of
coming scattered drift of the leaves by the wind. Only the sunflecks moving on the ground told me
the time is drifting. The red color of the soil makes strong contrast against the pure lapislazuli
blue of the sky. It looked that they had harvested sweet potato and one of the old man approached me along
the path and asked me where I had come from. He looked a little astonished to hear where I had came from
and said " You came over the river, it is like we go to fishing to Arakawa-river" as though he explained
to himself what a man he met that day and then looked like convinced. He would provablly be perplexed
to hear that I had come over the river which seperate the living customs there.
